Clisby Delano Hall, son of the late Simuel Hall and Eularia Gholston, was born in Panola, Alabama on September 1, 1944. He was the second eldest of his eight siblings: sister, Simola and brothers, Clifton, Merle, Elgin, Jackie, Simuel Jr., Bernard, and Randall.
After graduating from York West End High School in York, Alabama, Clisby relocated to Chicago, Illinois with his mother and brothers, Jackie, Simuel (“Junior”), and Bernard, and ultimately made a life for himself on the west side of Chicago.
In Chicago, Clisby earned a living working across various industries including manufacturing, glassmaking, printing, and most notably, trucking. After studying long nights and receiving hands-on training from his brothers, Simuel “Junior” and Elgin, in the early 2000s, Clisby received his commercial driver’s license (CDL) and pivoted career paths. Having discovered his true passion, Clisby spent the latter half of his life hauling freight nationwide—traveling coast to coast delivering loads while visiting family in between drop-offs and making friends along the way.
Beyond work, Clisby enjoyed Southern homecooked meals and spending time with family, retelling stories of his childhood, and sharing his strong opinions on politics, sports, religion, and a host of other topics. His hobbies included hunting, playing card games and pool, listening to blues music, and watching sports—especially his favorite teams, the Boston Celtics (NBA), Washington Redskins (NFL), and L.A. Dodgers (MLB). In fact, during Clisby’s time as a Chicago cab driver, his number and neighborhood nickname was “42”- a direct nod to his favorite baseball player, Jackie Robinson.
Despite his oft-serious facial expression and matter-of-fact tone, Clisby was known amongst family and friends for his sharp wit and comedic quips. One of his most memorable sayings was, “I’m at the treetop looking down!” Which is to say, he always knew what was going on around him and no one could trick or outsmart him.
Clisby, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was baptized in the mid-2000s at The Israel of God, embracing a faith that brought him peace and strength throughout his life. He married his first wife, Loretta, in the late 1960s, and together they lovingly raised their two daughters, DeDe and Deon. In 1989, Clisby married Marilyn Howard, and their union brought forth four wonderful children: Andrea, Chloé, Christopher, and Anthony.
Clisby's legacy continues through his children, as well as his cherished nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, all of whom will forever hold him in their hearts. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
