Eddie Snyder, “Ned”, or “PaPa Snyder” was born on May 8,1944 to Benard and Laura Snyder in Arcola, Mississippi.
Eddie was the sixth child of fourteen children. He attended Simmons High School in Hollandale, Mississippi where he received his high school diploma.
Eddie confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church, under Rev. Blander in Tralake, Mississippi. Ned moved to Chicago where he lived with his brother Jerome and his sister-in-law Bernice. It was at the time that Ned started his employment at Sweetheart Cup Company with the assistance of his brother, Jerome. Shortly afterwards, Ned became employed at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1967. He labored there for 27 years until he retired on June 1,1994.
In 1966, Ned met Rosie Mae Snyder. There was a kindling of hearts as they dated until 1967 and then became one as husband and wife. Ned and his beautiful wife Rosie had two lovely daughters, Deborah and Nicole. Ned and Rosie spent the next 56 years together as husband and wife until God called Rosie home on April 19, 2023.
To know our father (Ned) is to love him. He was kind, quiet, and had a gentle soul. He was mindful that if he could not make matters better, he definitely would not make them worse and so silence, he felt was his language of peace. Although he was a man of few words, if you struck a nerve with him then you would meet “Eddie Kane” his alter ego. Thankfully, we very seldom met that person because he truly never let anything bother him. Papa Snyder (Ned) was a good provider for his family. It was seldom that family members in need could not go to him for whatever support was needed.
He enjoyed watching basketball, baseball, and football. He found joy in sitting around in his backyard or garage with his buddies. He took pleasure in having his grandchildren around. His grandchildren loved having their grandfather in close proximity as they rode their bikes in the alley while he protectively looked on. Another thing Eddie enjoyed was spending time with his oldest sister Lottie. Lottie and Eddie would go to their sister Ann’s house to pick her up and they would spend the entire day together, going to different stores. Their favorite store to shop was “Bargains in a Box.” When they were not shopping, they enjoyed a meal at Ann’s house. He loved her chicken, rice and gravy (Hot Chicken Ned?). Eddie also really looked forward to every Thanksgiving Holiday. This was the only time of the year that he didn’t spend with his immediate family. He took that time to travel to Mississippi to visit with his sisters and brothers that he did not get to see often.
Ned suffered from an acute heart disease for quite some time and as time progressed, an added health concern was the need for dialysis. As a result of many existing physical ailments it was becoming more and more a reality that Eddie’s health was beginning to deteriorate. He was spending more time in the hospital than at home with family. We believe that between his failing health and the fact that he was truly missing his wife of 56 years impacted his determination to carry on. Ned surrendered to God on the morning of January 21, 2025. He heard God say “come home my son where there will be no more pain or sorrow.” At that moment Ned gained his wings and started his journey home.
Preceding him in death were: His parents, Benard and Laura Snyder; his wife, Rosie Snyder; his grandson, Deavontea Snyder; his sisters, Dorothy, Olivia, Ida, Annie, Lottie, and Willye (Marie); along with his brothers, Jerome and Bernard.
He leaves to cherish his memories: Daughters, Deborah A. Snyder (Cherise) and Nicole J. Snyder; sisters, Mary Gary (James), Laura Snyder-Jones (Alphonso); brothers, Charlie Snyder (Laura), Jessie Snyder (Margaret), and J.L. Snyder; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friend
