James Hastings Newman was born on February 15, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi.
He was born to parents, Ada Horton and Thomas Newman Sr. He was the youngest
boy and had seven siblings: three brothers and four sisters.
James attended Holy Starlight Baptist Church, under the late Rev. Charles Robinson.
James attended David G. Farragut High School on Chicago’s westside, then
continued his education at Malcolm X College.
James worked for Zenith for many years in customer service and as an electronics
salesman. He also was an entrepreneur, a blues recording artist.
James was instructed to go take his rest on May 2, 2024, at West Suburban
Medical Center.
He is preceded in death by: His parents; three sisters, Maxine Courts, Lily C. Davis
and Lucille Davis; and three brothers, Marshall MC Newman, Willie Earl Newman
and Thomas Newman Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories: His wife of 48 years, Katie; two sons, Dumarien
Newman and Darron Burton (Juanita); two grandsons, Careim Newman and Dante
Deshawn Burton; step-granddaughter, LaTrecia Williams; one sister, Atlean Powell.
and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
