Jannie B. Miles was born Jannie B. Wilkerson on October 3, 1940 in Tyronza, AR to John and Willie B. Wilkerson. She was the second of thirteen children.
Jannie accepted Christ early on in life and once belonged to the Christian Action Ministry. She later joined the First Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served as a faithful member until her death.
Jannie attended elementary school on the southwest side of Chicago and graduated from Crane High School. She later attended the Dawson Skill Center on the South Side of Chicago where she obtained her license for Practical Nursing.
Jannie’s early work history included working at Cook County Hospital in the Labor and Delivery Department. She left there for a brief period to work for the Hamlin House and M&M Mars Candy Co. She later returned to Cook County Hospital to pursue her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse where she worked until her retirement.
Jannie met George Miles in her younger years and together they had five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Alice and Gregory. Jannie was kind and sweet to everyone that knew her. Even the friends of her great grand-children loved talking with “Granny.” She was considered the neighborhood watch because she was always looking out of her front window and would always accept parcel packages for her neighbors.
Jannie departed this life suddenly after a brief illness on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Chicago, IL.
She is preceded in death by: Her parents, John and Willie B. Wilkerson; five siblings, Ernest, Mildred, Jonathan, Marion & Waymon; and a stepbrother, L.W.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories: Three daughters, Joane Lewis, Patricia Miles-Fentry (Steven) and Sheila Miles, all of Chicago, IL; seven siblings, John Jr Wilkerson (Jerri), Shirley Turner, Evelyn Wilkerson, Bertha Wilkerson, Ruby Wilkerson, Leonard Wilkerson (Linda) and David Wilkerson (Carolyn); eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
