Joe Powell

Joe Powell was a man of quiet strength, deep faith, and unwavering dedication to his family and work. Born in Lexington, Mississippi, to Ada Mae Cox and Willie Powell, he grew up with strong values that shaped his character. At a young age, he found Christ, and his faith remained a guiding force throughout his life.

He received his education at Wyona Public School before moving to Chicago, where he worked hard to build a better life. A skilled mechanic and entrepreneur, Joe was known for his ability to fix anything and his honest, dependable nature. He took great pride in his work and was respected by all who knew him.

On September 8, 2001, Joe married the love of his life, Atlean Winter, who became his lifelong partner for 24 years. Their bond was built on trust, respect, and an unshakable foundation of love.

Joe was a man of few words but great wisdom. He led by example, showing kindness, patience, and resilience in everything he did. He believed in hard work, keeping his word, and taking care of his loved ones. His presence brought comfort and stability, and his legacy of integrity and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

He leaves behind: His loving wife, Atlean Powell; his brothers, Willie D. Powell (Janice), George Powell, and John Woods (Joella); his sisters, Irene Hollins and Ella Ervin; his children, Mary Holder (Arnold Holder),Earnest Coleman, Alberta Bailey (Vaughn Bailey), and Dee Cleveland; and his stepson, Alonzo Newman.

Joe is preceded in death by: His parents; his brothers, GW Woods and Isadore Woods; his sister, Anna Bell Powell; and his children, Clarence Coleman, Pearl Coleman, and Willie Mae Coleman. Joe's legacy continues through his 14 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and his step-granddaughter, Monique Jones, all of whom will carry forward the values he instilled in them.

Though he is no longer with us, his spirit remains in the lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the love he shared. May he rest in peace, knowing he was truly loved and will never be forgotten.
