James Morris Mitchell, fondly known as “Bubba”, “Brother” and “Mitch”, was born November 18, 1934 in Louisville, Mississippi to the late Jethro and Maggie Mitchell. Three siblings have preceded him in death; Zettie B., Maranie and Sonia.
James attended Drake Elementary and Wendell Phillips High School. After completing his education, he joined the United States Army and served as a Specialist Third Class.
He married Cynthia Bagnaris and to this union one daughter was born, Karen. Later in life he married Claudia Moore, and they had two children, China and Christopher.
James started his spiritual life as a child at the Wesley Chapel AME Church in Louisville, Mississippi. While growing up in Chicago the family joined Hartzell United Methodist Church. He later joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the Leadership of Rev. Gordon Humphrey. At Shiloh he sang in the choir.
James contributed great talents in the workforce including, but not limited to, driving service vehicles for the City of Chicago, administration in human resources and facility services for the Jesse Brown Veterans Hospital. He retired from the hospital in the early 2000’s.
He enjoyed his leisure time cooking, reading, gardening in the summer, and feeding God’s animals. He also enjoyed listening to gospel music and spending time with his family and friends.
James, “Bubba” “Brother” “Mitch” will always be loved and remembered by: His siblings, Doris Roberson (Henry) and Mavis Caffey; children, Karen Mitchell, China Harper (Terrence) and Christopher Mitchell (Lovelie); grandchildren, Chrishawn, (beloved) Christopher D. Mitchell, Brittany, Destiny, and Taranee; great-grandchildren, Ra-Nylah, King, Autumn, and Da-Marion; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
